Notes: Our bees are Michigan bees that stay in Michigan year-round. We raise our queens from our overwintered stock. We select for gentleness, productivity, hardiness, and varroa resistance. Our queens are open-mated in our apiaries, so we do not claim them to be any specific race or subspecies. Instead, they are hybrids of the local bees surviving in our area. These bees are often referred to as “Michigan Mutts.” All queens will come marked. Nucs come in Pro Nucs which are yours to keep.
Suppressed Mite Reproduction (SMR) and Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH)
In 2023, we added genetics to our apiaries from Stevens Bee Company, Harbo Bee Company, VP Pol-Line 2.2, and USDA ARS Pol-Line. These genetics were specifically selected for their mite resistance characteristics (Suppressed Mite Reproduction (SMR) and Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH)). We will use the Harbo assay to continue to select for mite resistance to propagate these genetic traits within our apiaries. NOTE: No queen can be proven SMR/VSH until her colony has been assessed using a Harbo assay.
Overwintered Nucs
Our overwintered nucs are headed by a marked overwintered Michigan queen and five deep frames containing bees, brood, honey, and pollen. Some people prefer overwintered nucs as the queen has proven genetics that can carry her colony through the winter. As these nucs come with overwintered queens, we will have a limited number available. The pickup date of these nucs is weather-dependent, but they are generally available in the middle of May.
Spring Nucs
Our spring nucs are splits from our overwintered colonies headed by a new marked laying queen grafted from our stock and five deep frames containing bees, brood, honey, and pollen. Some people prefer spring nucs as they come with a new young vibrant queen. The pickup date of these nucs is weather-dependent, but they are generally available in the middle of June. We will have a limited number of spring nucs available.
